In yet another gruesome road accident on Gujarat’s highways, 11 persons from Punjpunjiya village — 80 km from Bharuch — were killed and 57 others were injured on Sunday afternoon when a truck in which they were travelling overturned at a sharp turn.
The villagers were going to Kankarapada village to attend a wedding. While 10 of the passengers, died on the spot, one person died at a Bharuch hospital.
Survivors said the driver was drunk and lost control of the truck, causing the accident around 2.30 pm near Chanchvel village. The villagers were on their way to attend one Rajesh Vasava’s wedding. Bharuch superintendent of police Siddharth Khatri said, "The passengers have told us that the driver had consumed country liquor, but this will be confirmed only after medical examination."
April has been the bloodiest month on Gujarat’s highways with 89 persons losing their lives in just a fortnight in a string of highway accidents. The worst was the Bodeli accident on April 16 when a GSRTC bus plunged into the Narmada main canal, killing 44 persons, including 41 schoolchildren.
Soon after the accident, locals rushed to the spot and informed police. The injured were rushed to the Netrang primary health centre. Those seriously injured have been shifted to a private hospital in Bharuch.
